Item upgrades can be used to increase the stats of a particular item. Based on the type of upgrade it can raise an item's Mark level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.

Item Level

The value of an item's stats base increase when it is upgraded. This value is the sum of all of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). The level of an item is a widely used measurement of power and is visible on all item tooltips. The average level of the item can be found on the character sheet.

Using the item level can help players evaluate the strength of equipment when they decide to buy or sell. It's a useful gauge of an item's worth and the amount of damage it's capable of dealing with. Comparing items from a vendor's stock can be done using the item level.

The level of the item can be checked by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the item's full description, including ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are a few theories on how the calculation of the item's level is made. One theory is that the level is a number derived from a formula that calculates how much an item's stats are worth. It considers that different perks are valued differently, and that gems found in sockets increase the value of the item. This could result in an item's ilvl calculated, which is typically very close to Blizzard's real level of the item.

However, this is not the only factor that can affect an item's ilvl as the size of the area the item dropped in can alter the value of its stats, such as by adding an additional level to its crit rating or haste rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have higher ilvl.

Item Stats

The stats of an item are a major part of what determines the value of an item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in different ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the best." The base stats on a weapon are increased by the weapon's stat modifications that are in turn boosted by the player's level.

Upgrades to an item can boost its stats. The rarity of an item determines the cost of upgrading. For instance, a grey or white item can only be upgraded once, while an item with rare tiers can be upgraded many times with higher prices.

Another way to change the stats of an item is by affixing it. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. The affixes can be used to give items additional damage or special abilities (such as revitalizing dead or reducing cooling downs) or to differentiate them by putting a name on them.

At present, all affixes can be rerolled by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button with circling arrows. This procedure will cost the player a specific amount of gold and other items which can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as other options for rerolling.

In addition to rerolling affixes, players can select which stats to be kept on an item when it is upgraded. The stat ranges are determined by the item's level. However every item will have at least one stat within the range, unless they are a unique item or a God Roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could be changed by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without rerolling the affixes or deciding which stats to increase. But, like base equipment, this would have to be done on a per-item basis and the interface for comparing items will not show all the stats that could be that were gained or lost at the same time.

Item Luck

A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the odds of finding items as well as the properties that appear on loot drops and the intensity of those properties. It doesn't, however directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player a possibility to obtain better equipment earlier in the game and is therefore more beneficial in early game runs than in later ones, as most players prioritize more powerful weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chances of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading that increases with each level of the item and can be further increased through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, armor, and shields can be made or spawn using the Luck property, with the default value of 40. These items can then be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to grant a further +40 Luck or to boost the Luck of the item up to 140.

Certain items, such as the weapon that is infused with hollow, can also be equipped to increase the damage of any skill that causes damage by 5%. These items can be bought from the shop, or they can be made using the correct ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items can be a costly process and not all upgrades will succeed. However, there are some cash shop items which allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent them from losing an item if the upgrade fails.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of successfully upgrading the item, and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The percentage of success can only be increased as much, and the likelihood that an upgrade will fail cannot be greater than 100%..

The success of an upgrade is also affected by the Luck of that item. Each item has an initial success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases that chance by an additional five percent.

The item upgrade overlays are rendered above items in the inventory. This can cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
